Two highly anticipated soccer matches this week:
- El Clasico – Barcelona (10-1-1) vs Real Madrid (10-2-0), TODAY at 3 PM (Gol TV), Camp Nou, Barcelona, Spain
Other than the UEFA Champions League Final, it is the second most followed club football match in the world, watched by hundreds of millions of people. La Liga had to reschedule this Sunday match to a Monday due to the parliamentary elections in Catalonia yesterday, because of “the security problems that the concurrence of both events on the same weekend could have in Barcelona”. Good move ! The rivalry comes about as Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain, and the two clubs are the most successful and influential football clubs in the country. Real Madrid has amassed 73 trophies and Barcelona 68. They are sometimes identified with opposing political positions, with Real Madrid and Barcelona representing Spanish nationalism and Catalan nationalism respectively. The match will feature (arguably) the 2 best soccer players in the world, Lionel Messi (Barcelona) vs Christiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid). If you cannot see it live, they will surely replay it on GolTV all week long. Don’t miss it !
- El Oldtimero – Darks vs Whites, this Saturday, Dec 4th, 9:30-10:30 AM, Carleton University Fieldhouse, Ottawa, Canada
While it will not be played in front of 80000 + in-house fans and millions on TV, it might be worthwhile to attend and participate in our upcoming scrimmage. Feel free to wear those national or club jerseys you have stored somewhere but rarely get a chance to wear. So far we have seen Greece jerseys, Panathinaiko, AS Roma and a few others. Demetri will bring his Barcelona (dark) and Germany (white) jerseys this week and challenges everyone to get into the spirit and bring out your jerseys as well.
See “Indoor soccer” in above menu for more details.
